GO Issued for Bauxite Mining in Vizag

 - 23/12/2015

VISAKHAPATNAM: The decision of the Andhra Pradesh Government to scrap GO 222 issued during the Congress rule for supply of bauxite ore to Anrak Aluminium has been welcomed but 'the double talk' of the Chief Minister over the issue has been criticised by many political parties and activists opposing the bauxite mining proposal in Visakhapatnam district.
When the late Y.S Rajasekhara Reddy was in power during 2007, an agreement was signed between Anrak Aluminium (a joint venture of Ras-al-Khaimah Government and Pennar group) and the State Government for supply of 224 million tonnes of bauxite ore proposed to be extracted from the eastern ghats of Visakhapatnam district by the AP Mineral Development Corporation (APMDC). However, due to various reasons including the controversy over the bauxite mining issue, mining could not be taken up but the Anrak group constructed an aluminium refinery at Makavaripalem in Visakhapatnam district.
Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday announced in the State Assembly that the GO 222 would be scrapped as it was faultily structured in favour of certain individuals and it was against the interests of the State Government. He made a statement that the State Government would do everything possible to protect the interests of Girijans and there would be a widespread debate on the controversial bauxite mining issue. No decision would be taken against the interests of the Girijans.
However, many questioned the "ambiguous" statement of the CM. P. Balaraju, the president of the district Congress unit and former tribal welfare minister, wondered why the CM did not scrap GO no. 97 issued during the TDP rule allowing bauxite mining in the area. The Government was playing politics with the issue and it was not really interested in the welfare of tribals. He wanted the Government to scrap GO no 97 also and shelve the proposal.

The two Communist parties also condemned the statement of the CM, saying that the AP Government was planning to take up bauxite mining against the wishes of the tribals and the step would be opposed by all.
